The Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies (LACX) program at the University of Rochester empowers students to explore one of the world’s most diverse and complex regions. Through an interdisciplinary curriculum spanning Political Science, Spanish, Anthropology, History, and more, students gain the tools to address the region’s challenges with innovative, multi-faceted solutions.
A New Era for LACX
Starting in Fall 2025, LACX will be offered as a major for the first time, supported by faculty from 11 disciplines, a dedicated coordinator, and cross-campus collaborations with URMC, Engineering, and Eastman.
Why Experiential Learning Matters
LACX students don’t just study the world—they experience it. Immersive learning opportunities deepen cultural understanding, sharpen problem-solving skills, and prepare students to engage with real-world issues across the Americas.
Through hands-on, place-based learning, students explore themes of migration, sustainability, social justice, and identity in diverse, global contexts. Signature experiences can include:
- Summer courses in Peru
- Indigenous Nahuatl language study in Mexico
- Faculty-led trips to coffee plantations in Guatemala
- Immigration-focused coursework with field visits to NYC
- Study abroad opportunities in Brazil
- Student-led, community-engaged capstone projects
These programs don’t just teach—they transform.
Why Your Support Matters

Here's what your gift can do:
- $50 - Provide two meals during a student’s academic trip to NYC or help cover local transportation for community-based research.
- $100 - Cover round-trip travel to NYC for one student or fund one Nahuatl language lesson.
- $250 - Fund class transportation to collaborate with local partners or support a guided visit to a regional cultural site.
- $500 - Sponsor a student’s flight to Latin America or rent a venue for a student-led cultural performance.
- $1,000 - Support a semester-long project with a community organization or fly one student to South America for study abroad.
- $3,000 - Fully fund a three-week, faculty-led study abroad trip or support a student’s unpaid summer internship.
- $5,000 - Sponsor a student research assistantship in Peru’s archaeology field school or highland community.
